Private Full-Day Waterfalls, Vines & Wine — Exploring the Lisbon Wine Region

Trails, Heritage & Wine Tasting in the Lisbon Countryside
From Lisbon/Cascais | Upon Request | 1 Day | Private Cultural & Hiking Tour

Just north of Lisbon lies a historic demarcated wine region, prized for its crisp white wines and still shaped by the small quintas that have farmed its slopes for generations. This full-day private tour combines a circular hiking route through the surrounding hills and river valley with a visit to a local wine and vine museum, lunch at a vineyard-view restaurant with a historic wine cellar, and an afternoon wine tasting with an estate visit at a family-run producer.

Tour Highlights

🥾 Hiking — River Valley & Hilltop Fort Circuit

Distance: 12.5 km | Type: Circular | Difficulty: Moderate | Elevation Gain: 301 m | Duration: Approx. 3–4 hours

The trail departs from a historic village center and climbs through a wooded river valley, passing two scenic waterfalls fed by a tributary of the Tagus before continuing up to the ruins of a hilltop fort with panoramic views over the surrounding wine country. The route then loops back down through vineyards and farmland to the starting point. Terrain is varied with some sustained elevation gain — guests must be in good physical health and physically fit.

Not suitable for guests with significant mobility limitations. Sturdy walking footwear recommended.

🍷 Wine & Vine Museum

Before lunch, visit a small local museum dedicated to the region’s winemaking history, tracing the evolution of viticulture in this historic demarcated region from its earliest documented vineyards to the present day, with exhibits on traditional production methods and the wines that made the area’s reputation.

🍽️ Lunch — Vineyard-View Restaurant & Historic Wine Cellar

Enjoy lunch at a family-run restaurant set among the vineyards, where simple, unpretentious cooking is prepared with care from fresh, seasonal ingredients. The setting includes the estate’s original wine cellar, once used for treading grapes by foot, and views over the vines that supply the house wine. The kitchen is best known for a boneless grilled rabbit dish — a house original — alongside other traditional Portuguese dishes such as pan-seared beef and salt cod.

Not suitable for vegans or strict vegetarians.

🍇 Afternoon — Guided Wine Tasting & Estate Visit

Conclude the day with a visit to a family-owned wine estate producing wines under this historic appellation. The tasting is a vertical flight of the estate’s white wine across three different vintages, paired with a red wine made from a traditional Portuguese grape variety, accompanied by a board of regional tapas. A guided walk through the estate provides insight into the winemaking process and the family’s history in the region.
