Central Portugal Sparkling Wine, Trails & Gastronomy Tour

Hiking, Sparkling Wines, Suckling Pig & Bamboo Bikes in the Bairrada Region
From Lisbon/Cascais | 3 Days | Private Cultural Tour | Available September–June

Few regions in Portugal reward slow exploration the way this corner of central Portugal does. On this private 3-day tour, you’ll pedal through vine-covered landscapes on bamboo bikes, follow ancient trails past thermal springs and hazelnut groves, descend into cellar vaults holding decades of sparkling wine, and sit down to the meal the region is most famous for.

This is wine country as it should be experienced: on foot, on two wheels, and at the table.

Tour Highlights

🚲 Bamboo Bike Rides Through Wine Country

Explore the vineyards, villages, and rural lanes of the region on bamboo-frame bicycles — a lightweight, sustainable, and quietly beautiful way to move through this landscape. Several distance options are available to suit your group’s pace and preference.

🥾 Heritage Hiking Trails

Three walks thread through the landscapes surrounding the region’s thermal valleys and agricultural heartland.

The longest trail (approximately 12km, circular, 3 hours, moderate difficulty) follows forestry tracks and rural paths through hazelnut groves and farmland, passing through small villages and a site of popular religious devotion before returning to its starting point.

A second route (approximately 10.8km, circular, 3 hours 15 minutes, medium difficulty) passes through vineyards, olive groves, and small farming communities, tracing the landscape that has shaped the region’s two most celebrated products. The walk passes traditional wine cellars, historic chapels, a picnic park, and a historic manor house with noble connections before returning through agricultural tracks and rural paths.

The third is a short, accessible circular walk (4km, approximately 1h30, easy) that begins at a historic thermal spring and winds through rural lanes and wooded paths to a small village, passing a traditional water source and a centuries-old chapel before returning through the thermal valley.

🥂 Sparkling Wine & Winery Experiences

This region has produced sparkling wine for over a century, and its cellars hold some of the most interesting stories in Portuguese viticulture. On this tour, you’ll visit three distinctly different producers.

The first is a multi-generational family winery, one of the oldest continuously operating in the region, with roots stretching back to the early 20th century. Set amid its own vineyards, the visit includes a guided tour of the cellars, insight into the traditional methods used to produce the region’s signature sparkling wines, and a wine tasting lunch — a generous and convivial spread of regional dishes paired with the estate’s own wines.

The second is a family estate with a pioneering reputation in the region’s still wines. A guided tour of the property concludes with a comprehensive tasting across the range, offering an illuminating portrait of what this corner of central Portugal can produce.

A third stop takes you to a lakeside estate where a walk through the vineyards, a cellar visit, and a wine tasting are combined with the particular pleasure of the setting.

🏛️ Museums, Heritage & Cultural Discoveries

Few areas of this size offer such a surprising density of cultural institutions and industrial heritage.

A remarkable underground museum, housed within active wine cellars, holds an eclectic private collection spanning African art, regional ceramics, azulejo tiles, fossils, and works by one of Portugal’s most beloved ceramic artists — one of the most unexpected cultural experiences in central Portugal.

A museum dedicated to the history of bicycles and motorcycles reflects the deep connection between this municipality and two-wheeled transport, with a collection that includes 19th-century bicycles and traces the local industry’s national significance.

A regional ethnographic collection documents the traditional costume and agricultural practices of the area, offering a grounded and human-scale portrait of local life through the generations.

A wine museum places the region’s viticulture in its broader historical context, rounding out a remarkably rich cultural itinerary.

♨️ Thermal Spas & Natural Heritage

The area sits within a broader thermal landscape. Two historic thermal spa estates are featured on the itinerary, where Belle Époque architecture, forested parkland, and thermal waters offer a quiet and restorative pause amid an active itinerary.

🐷 Regional Gastronomy

Leitão — slow-roasted suckling pig — is one of Portugal’s great culinary traditions, and this area is where it is done best. One of your included lunches is at an establishment that has been perfecting this art for generations, served as it should be with a glass of local espumante in hand. Daily lunches throughout the tour are equally memorable — curated traditional restaurants and celebrated local wines at every sitting.

Not suitable for vegans or strict vegetarians.
