Where Ancient Craft Meets Living Tradition in the Heart of Alentejo
From Lisbon/Cascais | June 5–7, 2026 | 3 Days | Private Active Cultural Tour
One of Portugal’s most enduring artisan traditions — hand-embroidered carpets whose patterns and techniques have passed from mother to daughter, generation after generation — is still very much alive in this Alentejo village. This 3-day private tour combines a celebrated showcase of that living heritage with hiking through the region’s cork oak landscape, immersive artisan and estate experiences, exceptional wine and olive oil tastings, and the rich regional gastronomy of the Alentejo interior.
At the heart of this tour, a historic town centre comes alive with displays of the region’s signature hand-embroidered carpets alongside artisan crafts, local gastronomy, and live performances — a rare opportunity to witness a living tradition celebrated by the people who keep it alive.
The tour also takes you inside a dedicated interpretive centre tracing the origins and evolution of this textile tradition — how patterns were developed, how skills were passed down, and what this craft has meant to the communities that created it. A second museum visit documents rural Alentejo life across generations — the agricultural calendar, seasonal labour, local customs, and the everyday realities of a way of life that has largely disappeared.
Two walks are woven into this tour, each offering a different lens on the landscape and history of the region.
The first is a short circular village trail of 3.5 km through ancient stone-walled pathways — narrow lanes flanked by dry-stone walls and olive trees that once defined the daily rhythms of agricultural life. Walking them today is to move through a largely unchanged rural landscape, past historic landmarks and village architecture. Duration: approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Difficulty: low.
The second is a longer circular route of 10.4 km through the montado — the distinctive cork oak and holm oak landscape that defines the Alentejo interior. The trail passes through open parkland, along a riverside, and across a centuries-old stone bridge, with the centrepiece being a venerable cork oak of approximately 250 years old, standing 12 metres tall with a canopy spanning 30 metres. Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours. Difficulty: low to moderate. A shorter variant of 7.3 km is available.
A working estate offers an immersive guided experience through the cork oak forest — exploring the ecology of the montado, the process of cork harvesting, and the role this landscape has played in Alentejo life for centuries. The experience is complemented by a tasting of carefully selected regional wines, with an explanation of how different cork types influence the wines you drink, in a rustic and intimate setting.
A second private estate visit offers a structured tasting of regional wines and extra virgin olive oils paired with a platter of local cheeses, charcuterie, Alentejo bread, and preserves. A field visit is included where conditions allow.
The tour also includes a sunset experience on a private estate, ending at a carefully chosen viewpoint where the light over the cork oak landscape is paired with wine and a selection of traditional Alentejo foods.
The gastronomy of this region is deeply rooted in Mediterranean tradition — olive oil, bread, and wine are ever-present, alongside pork, lamb, veal, traditional bread soups, and convent sweets. Lunches are taken at restaurants that best represent local cuisine, and the tour includes a tasting experience centred on organic olive oil, regional charcuterie, local cheeses, prickly pear preserves, and wine. Food here is inseparable from the rural world that shaped it — and tasting it is one of the most direct ways to understand this corner of Portugal.
