Saturday, Dec 21st – Discover the Salt Mines of Rio Maior a complex with 8 centuries of history. This is a short circular walk through cork forests, vineyards, and a small village where we can visit a modernized olive mill and taste local products. On our way back to our starting point we will pass through a scenic valley upon reentering the salt mine complex full of wooden huts housing crafts and products derived from salt production. Also at this time of the year we can see nativity scenes made of salt. At the end of the walk lunch will be at restaurant where the cuisine is enriched by the unique salt extraction.
Distance/Duration: 4km/2-2.5hrs
Moderate Level 2 – Accessible to those in good physical health and who are used to walking. On the route we may encounter some steeper differences in level and areas where the ground may be more difficult and uneven.
Must Take – 1.5L Water, Hat, Sunscreen, Lunch, Shoes with good grip for hiking, Clothing appropriate for the weather conditions.
