Tour Highlights

👞 Industrial Heritage & Contemporary Art Museums

Explore three exceptional museums celebrating Portugal’s craftsmanship and artistic heritage. Visit a former shoe factory housing extensive collections of footwear spanning centuries, along with original machinery and tools used in traditional leather-working and shoe-making processes. Discover a historic hat-making museum featuring traditional felt-making equipment, blocking machines, and exhibitions honoring the artisans who built this industry. Watch demonstrations of traditional hat-crafting techniques where skilled hands transform flat felt into perfectly shaped headwear.

Experience an outstanding contemporary art center showcasing modern and contemporary art collections alongside outsider art exhibitions. Housed in a former industrial building, this cultural space features rotating exhibitions by established and emerging artists, offering a compelling contrast to the traditional craftsmanship museums.

🎨 Contemporary Outdoor Sculpture Gallery

Discover large-scale contemporary sculptures by renowned artists displayed throughout public spaces. This open-air gallery creates striking contrasts between modern artistic expression and traditional urban landscapes.

🥾 Mountain Hiking Adventures

Experience two scenic mountain hiking trails showcasing traditional villages, natural beauty, and cultural heritage:

Ancient Village Trail (10.3km, approximately 4 hours, moderate): Begin in a restored granite village, abandoned for decades before restoration for rural tourism. Visit prehistoric rock engravings featuring spirals and ancient symbols carved into granite. Descend through forested slopes with pine, eucalyptus, and oak trees to a scenic mountain reservoir where a traditional irrigation channel winds through lush forests. Observe diverse birdlife including woodpeckers, hawks, and partridges. Visit an 18th-century baroque church and cross classified as a National Monument before returning through vineyards and traditional villages with mountain views.

Terraced Villages Trail (10.5km, approximately 3.5 hours, moderate): Journey through traditional mountain hamlets featuring granite and schist architecture along ancient pathways connecting historic communities. Walk past old stone houses with slate roofs through terraced agricultural landscapes that provide unique color to the scenery. Ascend through forest paths toward high mountain viewpoints where, on clear days, distant waterfalls become visible. Visit a mountain shrine where legend says shepherds witnessed an apparition while tending their flocks. Observe mountain grasslands with interesting flora, and listen for bullfinches and woodpeckers in oak forest patches.
